SYNOPSIS
Old professional killer Wagner is looking for someone to teach what he knows as he is in his last days, and chooses Max, a passionless young thief, to be his successor.
CINDIE SAYS:
Mathieu Kassovitz’s Assassin(s) (1997) is not your typical hitman film. Rather than glorifying the life of a contract killer, it deconstructs it, presenting a sobering commentary on society’s normalization of violence. Featuring a standout performance from veteran actor Michel Serrault, Assassin(s) is a bleak yet compelling exploration of moral decay and intergenerational corruption.
Upon its release, Assassin(s) sparked controversy, particularly at the Cannes Film Festival, where its raw depiction of violence led to polarized reactions. Kassovitz had already made waves with La Haine, which tackled police brutality and social unrest in France.
Assassin(s) is a bold and unsettling film that challenges audiences. It remains an important, thought-provoking entry in the genre.
