SYNOPSIS
The story of a group of immigrant women in Rome, most of them from South America, who work as caregivers or domestic cleaners, and all of them football fans.
CINDIE SAYS:
At the heart of Las Leonas is a diverse group of women from Latin America, Africa, and Eastern Europe, all living as undocumented migrants in Rome. These women juggle low-paying, often unstable jobs—cleaning houses, caring for the elderly, and other forms of labor that keep them on society’s margins. The soccer team becomes their sanctuary, a space where they can forget their struggles and simply exist as themselves.
This documentary captures their lives with unfiltered intimacy, showcasing not just their struggles but also their camaraderie, humor, and tenacity. The film stands apart from traditional narratives of migration by focusing on the women’s agency and the small victories that keep them going.
Competing against more organized and better-equipped teams, Las Leonas stand out not just for their passion but for their inventive approach to the game. The audience gets a front-row seat to the laughter, the tears, and the sheer joy of women reclaiming a sense of identity and purpose through sport.
