SYNOPSIS
Gauguin went into exile in Tahiti in 1891. He wanted to find his painting, as a free, wild man, far from the moral, political and aesthetic codes of civilised Europe. He went into the jungle, defying loneliness, poverty and illness. There he met Tehura, who became his wife and the subject of his greatest works.
CINDIE SAYS:
Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti (2017), directed by Édouard Deluc, is a visually rich and emotionally introspective biopic that captures the famed French post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin’s time in Tahiti. While the film showcases Gauguin’s search for artistic freedom and self-discovery, it also delves into his inner turmoil and the consequences of his restless ambition.
The film’s cinematography, overseen by Pierre Cottereau, is one of its standout features. Much like Gauguin’s paintings, Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti is awash in vibrant, tropical colors that evoke the natural beauty of the South Pacific. The film feels almost painterly in its use of light, color, and composition, subtly reflecting the artist’s own style.
