CINDIE SAYS:
Romain Levy is known for his work in French comedies, having previously co-written and directed “Radiostars” (2012). His background in comedy heavily influences “Gangsterdam,” blending action with humor, though the execution has sparked diverse opinions.
The film takes full advantage of its Amsterdam setting, showcasing iconic locations and the city’s vibrant nightlife. It features a strong supporting cast, including Manon Azem as Nora and Côme Levin as Durex, Ruben’s eccentric friend. Upon its release, “Gangsterdam” faced criticism for its handling of certain comedic elements and stereotypes. Some viewers found the humor offensive, which sparked debates about the limits of comedy and cultural sensitivity in modern filmmaking.
It provides an interesting case study in genre-blending and the cultural nuances of comedy.
